NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona Beach Thunder owners Zack McDonald, Kevin McDonald and Antone Smothers were three of six New Smyrna Beach High alumni honored by CAPS (Community & Alumni Providing Scholarships)Saturday, January 27 at New Smyrna Beach High School.
The trio was honored with a brick inscribed with their name and career accomplishments that will be arranged along the New Smyrna Beach High School “legacy walk,” which parlays the student history on a campus walkway.
In his remarks, Kevin McDonald said he owns this team in the community’s behalf.
“Our community deserves something like this team, and I’m just glad that we can be the people to give that to you,” he said.
Smothers was humbled by his award.
“An opportunity like this really grounds you and I’m glad I can bring the pride back to my high school,” said Smothers, who also expressed the pride in his progression from the kid he was in high school, to part owner of the Thunder.
Among the other alum honored were present and former University of Florida greats Dallas Baker and Wes Chandler. Neither of the hometown legends were able to attend, with Baker, a key player in the Gators’ 41-14 destruction of Ohio State in the 2007 BCS Championship game, participating in the Senior Bowl. Baker made up for his absence by sending a video recording of his speech and sending his mom to the podium to accept the honor.
Chandler went on to a lengthy NFL career with the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers.
The legacy walk was installed a year ago by the school’s staff, and any NSBHS alum can purchase a brick with their name on it. The walk generated $57,000 last year, and aims to exceed that figure by 20 percent this year. All funds from the bricks are put into a scholarship program for graduating seniors that has allowed many to attend their desired colleges.
