On the weekend that Mel Kiper Jr. was created for and misfires on 97.5 percent of his prognostications, the Daytona Beach Thunder and Osceola Ghostriders of the World Indoor Football League will honor all former professional football draft selections at their games on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29.
The former draft picks will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies. Those wishing to attend to can e-mail draft@wifl.us with the year they were drafted and the team and round in which they were selected.
“This is a way to honor former players in the Central Florida area,’’ said WIFL Director of Communications Dan Ryan. “We were going to do something cute like give away free Mel Kiper Jr., haircuts, but the barbers and beauticians we talked to indicate they now take some sort of oath that prohibits them from ever cutting hair like that again.”
After spending the weekend watching alleged experts overanalyze upsides and the 40-yard dash time of every college senior in North America, football fans can watch some actual football being played as the upstart indoor football league begins the second half of its inaugural season with two critical games.
In Daytona Beach, the Augusta Spartans (4-3) are hoping to maintain their winning streak while the Thunder (1-6) is trying to end a three-game skid. Augusta features the league’s best pass catching tandem with league-leading receiver Marvin Stone and former Wake Forest star Anthony Young. Fans of the indoor game can see arena football legend Barry Wagner – who recorded his 1,000th professional reception last week --play for the Thunder along with promising wide receiver Cory McKinney out of DeLand. Kickoff is Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
