THUNDER ROLLING TO af2 WITH LEMERAND RIDING SHOTGUN

Our local indoor football team was facing fourth-and-long situation last week, and Daytona Beach Thunder CEO Zack McDonald scrambled for a first down.

The organization had pulled out of the World Indoor Football League, a league it helped form just a year ago.

Time was running out on the opportunity for the Thunder to join another league in time to play in 2008 season.

The team had targeted the Arena Football League 2 (af2), but it seemed like a long shot. There didn't seem to be enough time.

McDonald then pitched his idea about trying a bigger and better league to one of the area's big hitters -- Gale Lemerand.

McDonald said Lemerand has joined the Thunder's partnership group, and Lemerand's presence paves the way for a strong bid to join af2.

"He has helped us achieve all the league requirements," McDonald said.

McDonald was confident enough that the Thunder wired the league the $20,000 application fee late last week.

Lemerand

"I'm really excited about it," Lemerand said. "I'm a typical entrepreneur, Everyone who knows me knows my passion for the game of football. I have witnessed the excitement of Arena football that the Thunder has brought to our community. Zack and Kevin have shared their vision of a top notch new league.  The McDonald’s have proven to Volusia/Flagler counties that they have the ability and compassion to develop a quality football franchise that so visibly gives back to this great place we live in. This type of family oriented, fun entertainment, is of paramount importance to all my friends and neighbors, for both the economic and cultural impact this team brings to our community.  I love my adopted home town and encourage my friends to support our team.  It is a privilege to be a part of this organization.”

McDonald said, while getting Lemerand involved is a great start, the Thunder still have a lot to do to get ready for another season.

"I think it's very exciting to have a team like this in the area," Lemerand said. "They came to me with this opportunity, and I felt like it was a good opportunity to grow the sport. I've been to many of their games, and I see families and people from all walks of life.

"I think it's good for Daytona Beach to have another pro sports team in the area on a permanent basis."

“I will always thank Gale for helping keep the vision and the dream alive”. Mcdonald said.
