In 2005, Moffett lead a powerful UCF offense that included RB Kevin Smith, the 2007 NCAA Rushing Leader and WR Mike Walker, a third round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2007 NFL Draft. Moffett passed for 2925 yards and 22 touchdowns while throwing just nine interceptions.
Many football fans in Central Florida remember Moffett as a top high school quarterback when he came out of Winter Park High School in 2003. Moffett was the 18th rated QB nationally according to Rivals.com and after entertaining offers from the University of Florida, University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina, he settled on playing for his hometown UCF Knights.
After attempting to catch on with the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League, Moffett is determined to launch his professional career with Daytona Beach. Moffett had many opportunities to play around the country this season, but just as he did in 2003, he has opted to try and make it with a hometown team.
“I tried to sign with the Predators” Moffett said. “They told me I had the talent to make it (in the AFL) but I need to find my niche and get some arena experience.” The ThunderBirds, in their first year of existence in af2 should be the place for Moffett to get that experience.
Moffett admitted that the transition from the outdoor game to the arena game is a tough one. “The arena game moves at a quicker pace and takes adjusting to” Moffett said. “From the QB standpoint, what they teach you in arena football is the opposite of what coaches teach you in outdoor football. In the outdoor game, you are taught to look for your short routes first and the deep ball second but in the arena game, its deep first and short second.”
Moffett was asked why he looks forward to playing for the ThunderBirds.
“With the popularity of af2 spreading around the country, it is a luxury to have a team in my backyard” Moffett said.
Moffett was asked what the fans should expect from him and the team when the ThunderBirds take to the field at the Ocean Center later on this spring.
“I will bring competitiveness, athleticism, and leadership by example and the ability to make a play when things break down” Moffett said. “It’s not just me but a very athletic team that will play a tough and exciting brand of football because that is what Coach Walls expects of us.”
When asked what his initial impression was of Coach Walls, Moffett provided a short, sweet and to the point answer.
“He is fun to be around and I sense he is a player’s coach.”
We will get a chance to see the development of the relationship between player and coach when the Daytona Beach ThunderBirds take to the turf at the Ocean Center for their first home game of their inaugural season in af2 on Sunday, April 6th.
